What Makes Tinnitus Saurus Different

By Carlos S.

Our Engineering Approach

There are several tinnitus apps available, and some do a good job at what they offer. We built Tinnitus Saurus because we wanted a tool specifically engineered around notched sound therapy — with the precision and flexibility that the research calls for. Here's what we focused on and why.

Engineered Around Notched Sound Therapy

Sound masking — playing background noise to cover the ringing — can provide temporary relief, but it doesn't address the underlying neural hyperactivity that causes tinnitus.

Tinnitus Saurus is built specifically around notched sound therapy, a clinically-researched approach that removes your tinnitus frequency from the audio signal. Over time, this trains your auditory cortex to reduce its overactive response at that frequency. We focused our entire engineering effort on implementing this approach with precision.

Real-Time Notched Music

This is the feature we're most proud of. Tinnitus Saurus lets you import your own music and applies the notch filter in real time as it plays. Your favorite songs become personalized therapy sessions. The original research specifically studied notched music, so we engineered the app around real-time DSP that works with any audio you bring.

Per-Ear Frequency Profiles

Tinnitus rarely presents the same way in both ears. Your left ear might ring at 4,433 Hz while your right rings at 3,686 Hz.

Tinnitus Saurus supports independent frequency profiles for each ear. Match your left ear, match your right ear, save both, and the app applies the correct notch to each channel. This level of precision matters for effective therapy.

Offline-First, Privacy by Design

We don't collect your data. We don't require an account. We don't track your usage. Everything — your frequency profiles, session history, journal entries, imported music — stays on your device.

This is an architectural decision, not a marketing bullet point. There is no server, no database, no analytics pipeline. We engineered it so that your data physically cannot leave your phone.

A Relief Journal That Actually Helps

Knowing whether therapy is working requires data. After each session, you can rate your tinnitus severity on a 1-10 scale, add notes, and view your severity trend chart over 30 days.

This isn't just for you — it's useful data to share with your audiologist. Being able to show real severity trends over weeks and months gives your care team something concrete to work with instead of vague impressions.

Session Tracking and Streaks

Consistency is the most important factor in notched sound therapy. The research shows results after months of consistent daily use. That means the app needs to make daily sessions feel achievable and rewarding.

The session timer tracks your daily and weekly listening time, maintains a streak counter, and shows your all-time stats. It's simple motivation without being gamified or annoying.

What We Don't Do

  • No ads. Ever.
  • No miracle claims. We say "may help reduce perceived loudness" because that's what the research supports.
  • No social features. Your tinnitus is personal. We're not building a community platform.
  • No AI-generated therapy plans. The research is clear about what works: notched sound at your frequency, consistently, over weeks. We implement that directly.

The Bottom Line

Tinnitus Saurus is a precision tool engineered around peer-reviewed research. It does one thing — notched sound therapy — and does it well. If you want a carefully built app that respects your time, your data, and your intelligence, that's what we made.
